poor water quality increases the impact of higher water temperatures, supercharging coral bleaching. So it’s time to clean up our act.
soul initiatives is supporting homestays and local communities to:
-
- install septic tanks to remove pathogens
- install grease traps in homestay kitchens to avoid fatballs in the sea
- create constructed wetlands as a nature based solution for reducing nitrogen and phosphate levels that protect algae and sponge growth
most wastewater is not as visible as this. BUT higher concentrations of nitrogen and phosphates is an invisible killer of raja ampat’s reefs.
Raja Ampat has a wastewater problem.
Every day tens of thousands of local people and tourists are peeing, pooing, washing their bodies and their clothes and eating food prepared in kitchens.
Most of the toilets are open bottom pits and other wastewater floods onto the ground. Raja ampat’s islands are made of old reef and are highly porous. so all of this wastewater ends up on the reefs, feeding algae and sponge growth.
